How to clean your Alice Made This jewellery and accessories
Raw materials are the starting point of any Alice Made This accessory or piece of jewellery. Whether it’s our cufflinks and statement necklaces, or our bracelets and stacking rings, all of our designs begin with a material, an idea and a process.
Like all jewellery, our pieces require a little bit of care and attention to keep them looking as new and refined as when they first came out of the box. Metals, by their very nature, react with their atmosphere and change in tone over time. With these top tips however, you can maintain their finishes to suit your personal style and preference.

Caring for brass
Over time brass tarnishes and can lose its warm gleam. You can easily restore it to be shiny and bright again with a soft cloth and a commercial cleaner like Brasso. Use this sparingly though as a little bit goes a long way!
Caring for copper
Like brass, copper also tarnishes over time and with use. In principle, exposing copper to air turns it black and water can turn the surface greenish-blue. But don’t worry, this happens slowly and you can get your copper items shining in all their glory again with a soft cloth and a little brasso.
Caring for steel
Every steel Alice Made This piece is stainless steel so they tarnish very little. Our steel men’s accessories and women’s jewellery are also anti-microbial and inherently clean. The best way to clean these (if they need it) would be to rub it between your fingers in soapy water before drying with a soft cloth.
Caring for your plated pieces
A number of our cufflinks, lapel pins, shirt studs, bracelets, necklaces, earring and rings are electro plated with precious metals including 22 carat gold, rose gold and silver. To keep them looking brand new, polish with a dry microfibre cloth and, if needed, rinse in warm water and let them air dry.
For a heavier tarnish, Hegarty jewellery dips work well to help you clean plated jewellery. It removes tarnish instantly by simply immersing the jewellery in the dip basket and swirling for 5 to 10 seconds. Rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.
Caring for solid silver
Salted warm water is ideal for cleaning silver jewellery. Submerge your accessories for a minute and then rinse and wipe clean. For heavier tarnish, we recommend Hegarty silver clean for our solid silver jewellery. It is a dip and works well to restore both our polished and matte items. Simply immerse your jewellery in the dip (or use a sponge) and soak for 5 to 10 seconds. Rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.
Caring for solid gold
To clean our solid gold pieces, use dish washing detergent in warm water. Find a toothbrush and gently scrub the tarnished piece. Rinse and then dry. Remember to be gentle! Gold is a soft metal.
Some tips on how best to store your jewellery and accessories
- Treat your jewellery like any other wardrobe item. Clothes must be washed and repaired - the same goes for jewellery.
- When you’re not wearing your jewellery, keep them in a safe and secure place.
- Avoid keeping your pieces in the bathroom because of all the moisture. This can cause tarnishing
- Get yourself a jewellery box to avoid oxidation and tarnishing. This is particularly great for sterling silver.
- Try to avoid direct contact with water and chemical products like soap and perfume.
- Take off your jewellery before you go into the swimming pool, shower or sauna etc.
- Remove your jewellery and accessories before cleaning and doing household tasks involving detergents.
- Coil your chains gently and try not to pull them to avoid potential damage.
