Winding along the coastline and through the tight roads of North Cornwall, flanked by swaying grasses and delicious greenery, we arrive at a clean lined, timber building indicative of the precision and care that sits behind its walls. Tucked amid the Cornish pastures, St Eval Candle Company has evolved from the humble beginnings of crafting candles by hand in the family farmhouse kitchen. 30 years on, and keeping the traditional crafts alive, St. Eval’s spirit continues to be rooted in all things natural.

Perfecting the art and science of making candles, St. Eval draws inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of the Cornish countryside and coastline. In the grounds of the farm-based factory and office, is a tranquil pond inviting all kinds of wildlife to thrive. Looking over it like the BFG, is a Wind Turbine that generates St. Eval’s close-to-carbon neutral production process together with Photo Voltaic Panels and their Biomass Boiler. Pioneering an ethical and sustainable business is in their bones. St. Eval’s love of treading softly on the earth, is one of their core values and feeds directly into the inspiration and information in their fragrances and candle making.

A journey from candle to bracelet & beyond

The Odyssey Candle uses a combination of mineral and vegetable waxes, blended together to achieve a mix that gives superior performance, stability and reliability, and a fabulous scent throw. This unique blend of ‘food grade’ quality wax and fragrance ensures a consistent aroma, superior burn quality and a beautiful appearance.

The Odyssey

A clean natural white wick is threaded through the candle mould and table jig ready for the first pour of Samphire and Sage scented wax. A beautiful gender neutral blend of coastal herbs.

Cooled overnight the candle dries and sinks to the correct level. Once settled, the wick is bashed leaving a 10mm safety base layer, on which a pure wax ‘top’ is added. This is cooled again. The candle is then released from its machined aluminium case, giving its unique mottled look and feel, and placed in a jig to be ‘ironed’, finishing off the precision edging that has come to be expected from a St. Eval candle.

On to the Alice Made This studio, the precision cut Dot Charm, made from aerospace grade brass by our engineers in Hertford, is flame heated and carefully hand embedded by Alice into the wick free 10mm area of the candle wax.

Left to cool for 24hrs the Odyssey Candle is wrapped in protective eco-friendly hive paper, and bound with a Midnight Blue hand-sewn Habotai silk.

At its final destination, the candle owner burns through the Odyssey Candle for 60 hours and creates its afterlife! After burning the candle, the Dot Charm can be popped out of the wax and sent to Alice Made This for personalising with a message and cleaning.

Using its original packaging including a recyclable greeting card, the candle owner can fill in their engraving request and Alice Made This will engrave the blank side of the Dot Charm at no extra charge, and then clean, polish and return it to the candle owner.

Once received back, the candle owner threads the engraved and polished Dot Charm onto the Midnight Blue Habotai silk wrap to create a lifelong bracelet to wear or to gift.
